Artificial intelligence (AI) is a groundbreaking technology with the potential to revolutionize industries, improve our lives, and address the world’s most pressing challenges. However, rapid advancements and increasing autonomy of AI systems also raise concerns about potential risks to society and humanity. Recently, an open letter signed by Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and other tech leaders called for an immediate six-month pause in the development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, citing concerns about AI’s potential dangers and the current “out-of-control race.”

This AI debate mirrors discussions during the industrial revolution when new technologies led to substantial societal shifts. The industrial revolution, which began in the late 18th century, transformed industries, economies, and societies through rapid technological advancements. Inventions like the steam engine and power loom revolutionized manufacturing and transportation, driving unprecedented productivity levels. This period was marked by significant societal changes, such as the growth of urban centers, the rise of a new working class, and increased wealth.
